STEPPING OUT

So a little birdy has asked me for the lyrics to this song, 'Stepping Out', which will be on my forthcoming album....

I wrote the song just before I moved out of my old house about a year ago. I'd only just started to show an interest in making music when I'd moved in three years previously, but two other musicians lived there and they really inspired me and nurtured me, and so I was a bit nervous about leaving. I thought maybe I would lose everything I'd learned through them, but I'm still here and doing fine.

The house we lived in was kind of charmingly dilapidated old maisonette above a shop in a really rough part of Bristol, full of my housemate's old junk. We liked to think of it as having a sort of 'Withnail and I' type chic to it, although I don't know if our landlord would've agreed. The 'love pet' line at the end is in reference to a Ted Hughes poem of the same name that my housemate read to us one day and that seemed to fit with certain entanglements that were going on with some of our friends. It's probably the most disturbing and devastating poem I have ever heard in my life. You should read it here: http://standingonthebrink.wordpress.com/poetry/lovepet/

Stepping Out

I outgrew these shoes, but I don't walk alone
These shoes don't fit no more but they follow me home

A dusty lung, a broken chair, not a care in the world
The ceiling caving in, a breath of stale air that unfurls
As you light your cigarette, a faulty switch
We left the gas on
And when we lit our cigarettes...

I see youthful beauty oh-oh
She's lying insecure
Cradled amongst the cracks
On the rooftop we adore

Is this stepping out into the great unknown?
Or am I setting up just down the road? x2

A dusty lung, a broken chair, not a care in the world
The ceiling caving in, a breath of stale air that unfurls
As you light your cigarette, a faulty switch
We left the gas on
And when we lit our cigarettes
We burned holes in our hearts
We talked ourselves to death
We heard they tore themselves apart
An unforgiving love pet.....love pet......love pet......

One day I'll be somebody and I'll breathe in fresh air
One day you'll be somebody, not a single care

One day I'll be somebody and I'll breathe in fresh air
One day you'll be somebody, not a care in the world

BEHIND THE SCENES

So here is a picture of me and Ben Dowden feeling all happy because we made something new together! Many of you have probably seen lots of Ben's videos online but have never seen what he, himself, looks like. So here he is!

I'm not quite sure what I'm trying to do in this one - except ruin what would otherwise be a really nice picture of Ben. Whoopsy!

This one is a picture of us just after Ben showed me the video of Rebecca Black's 'Friday' song, and I got all angry with how fake and crap and rubbish the world has become! Har har!

And finally, a Ben's eye view of the world............

GOODBYE! x

Snakes video: January 2010

This is a video I made back in January when it snowed...

It was made with a London based filmmaker called Tom Swindell. We were running out of time before the sun went down and ended up stopping on a roadside rather than managing to reach our final destination. Just as we were about to start filming some rather noisy kids walked past. We managed it in one take in the end though!
